Female genital mutilation targets little girls, who are helpless, who cannot fight back. It’s a crime against a child, a crime against humanity. It’s abuse. It’s absolutely criminal and we have to stop it.
The Story of Nyanokwia- a reformed circumciser.
“My mother taught me how to circumcise girls,” Says Nyanokwia. “In fact, she gave me her knife. After a while I graduated to using a blade. The best time for business was during the December holiday after children have closed school.”
“Circumcising girls pays very well; sometimes I did up to 500 of them. They were different ages, ranging from seven to twelve. My bill was $5 paid in cash before circumcision.”
“In this day and age things have changed I would like to stop circumcising girls. The world now is changing and I think the most important thing our girls to have an education in order to become useful women in the community not like me.”
“Since I began circumcision of girls I have circumcised over 20,000 young girls in forty years, I feel horrible each time because so many children have died during the cut in my hands, but it seemed like a good idea at the time, I was making women in the society; little did I know I was actually destroying their lives but now I would like to stop.”
I have attended several meetings organized by Msichana Empowerment Kuria on Anti-FGM and I have learnt a lot about the harmful effects of female circumcision. It is then that I realized I was doing more harm than good.
Nyanokwia is now 80, a mother of eight with over 35 grandchildren – has chosen to put all that behind her.
We are looking forward to closely with women circumcisers like Nyanokwia to help them find alternative sources of income generation as opposed to earning a living through circumcision. We are hoping to involve them in chicken keeping, goat and cow rearing and microfinance projects among others.
We would like to support women like Nyanokwia who are willing to stop circumcision begin businesses so that they could still earn money.
Wondering where we have been all this time? Working in the community. Time goes so fast, please stayed tuned to more of our posts, we will be giving an update of all the amazing projects we have this year.
Happy New Year 2016!!!!
Love and Love.
